BUILDING PEACE FROM PIECES

Getting Affairs In Order

1/8/2014

Bringing another year to a close can have so many meanings for us. While there are a number of beliefs, practices and religious faiths, most people are celebrating one holiday or another during this time of year.

Approaching a new year, further, prompts many to make resolutions. Some vow to drop pounds while others resolve to exercise more. Others plan to spend more time with family. This time of year can even bring a desire to clean house. Purging and donating to our less fortunate brothers and sisters are always favorites of mine.

Frankly, I tend to approach each day as an opportunity to take stock and begin anew. I, nonetheless, do have a particular type of housekeeping matter I like to recommend. From a legal perspective, every person should have certain minimal legal documents in place. The most familiar one, of course, is a last will and testament. Others, for consideration, include power of attorney, living will and medical healthcare directive. These documents will present a greater significance to some than others. In fact, depending upon the circumstances, a couple of these legal instruments could be an urgent matter for some people.

The good news is that wherever you might find yourself in life today, there is an avenue you can take to address the needs you might have. The preference, of course, is to "prepare for the possibilities" and "avoid the emergencies" which force the less-than-preferred courses of action.

It pays to visit one's circumstances and make plans to honor self, those we love and what we love. Taking care of business brings order and peace of mind. You certainly owe it to yourself to get your affairs in order. Have you taken stock, yet? If not, start by educating yourself. You can, then, proceed from an informed position. You can begin here and now.
