America loves to complain. I mean reeeeally loves to complain!
We complain about our educational system, yet, I have shouted about the inequities and rallied for taking action, when parents were no where to be found. We complain about politicians who, clearly, have their self-serving personal agendas at the core of all they do, yet, we fail to vote them out of office and vote men and women of integrity into office. If we don't do our job to fire bad employees and hire good employees, the employees are not to blame. We are. I have to agree with Michael Jackson when he suggested we take a look at the man (woman) in the mirror. We have the power to change the things that are wrong in our world. In fact, only we can change them. The problem is doing so requires work and accountability. We hate to work at anything and we definitely do not want to be held accountable for our thoughts, words and actions. This society is the laziest society yet. Everyone is looking for instant everything. "I want what I want and I want it now and I want it with no effort, no work and no accountability or consequences!" Yep. That's the American mantra today. Sad. Very, very sad. How dare we wonder why our young people are fat, lazy and without ambition! We made them that way! We taught them by example and, then, have the audacity to get offended and, yes, even angry, when someone else points out these atrocities. One of my all-time favorite comments I hear over and over is, "I don't have any money." No one is doubting there are economic factors across the board for (not all) most. There is another factor which rarely, if ever, is addressed. Well, after all, it hits home so we can't look there. The whole idea, of course, is to find someone else to blame. Let's find something else responsible for our household economic status. It could not be that we spend my money on whatever we want and then cry about not having money for what we need. The four meals eaten out every week were just fast food and buffet meals. They didn't cost that much. What is the harm in keeping up with the Joneses and the Joneses' children! So what if our children just have to have the latest styles and keep up with every trend designers feed society! So what if our children know the latest dances and the hottest pop stars and can sing every inaudible word in all the latest music but can't name one state senator! So what if our children have more self-esteem issues than ever before! So what if the percentage of juvenile offenders and juvenile victims has grown exponentially within the last two decades! So what if the manner in which our children dress could not be more denigrating or sad! We live in glass houses and have no business throwing any stones. We can fix our problems. We simply need to want to fix them enough to actually fix them! No one - not one - person has the right to complain about the bigger picture - the bigger issues if we are not doing our part to fix the issues from our end. What we see is our creation. It is the mess we created and it is our obligation to fix our mess. Comments are closed.
